Distance divided by speed equals time. The real challenge isn't going fast — it's slowing down when you get there. At Voyager 1's speed of 61,000 km/h, Alpha Centauri is 80,000 years away. At the speed of light, it's 4.37 years — but that's from your perspective. From Earth's perspective, it's still 4.37 years.
NASA's Parker Solar Probe holds the speed record at 692,000 km/h — about 0.064% the speed of light. Even at that insane speed, reaching Alpha Centauri would take 6,800 years. The fastest object ever made by humans is barely 0.07% of light speed.
The reason we can't just go faster is fuel. Chemical rockets are incredibly inefficient. A nuclear thermal rocket might get us to 5% light speed. A fusion rocket maybe 10%. To reach meaningful fractions of c, we'd need something entirely different — antimatter, laser sail, or something we haven't invented yet.
Amazon can get you a package in two days. Mars? Not so fast. The planets are at different distances depending on their orbits, and you can't just fly in a straight line — you have to use orbital mechanics, which means waiting for launch windows that open every 26 months for Mars.
A robotic probe like Perseverance took about 7 months to reach Mars. A human mission would likely take 6-9 months, depending on the transfer orbit. Going to Jupiter? New Horizons took 13 months just to get a gravity assist from Jupiter. A direct trip would take years.
The real problem is communication. A one-way light signal to Mars takes 3 to 22 minutes. To Jupiter, 30 to 52 minutes. To Neptune, 4 hours. If you order something on Mars, you can't call customer service — the call takes 20 minutes to connect, and they can't fix it instantly. Interstellar delivery isn't a logistics problem. It's a physics problem. You can't go faster than light, and you can't speed up the conversation.
