The Science Behind Jump on Other Planets

Jump height is inversely proportional to gravity. If you can vertical-jump 40 centimeters on Earth — which is roughly average for an adult — you'd jump about 2.4 meters on the Moon. On Jupiter, that same jump would barely reach 16 centimeters, and the atmospheric pressure would crush you before you left the ground.

On a small asteroid like Bennu, a standing jump would actually give you escape velocity. You'd simply float off into space and never come back. That's why NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission had to use a touch-and-go sample collection instead of landing properly. Even a tiny push would send the spacecraft drifting away.

The highest anyone has ever jumped on Earth is 1.82 meters by Javier Sotomayor (1993). On the Moon, that same vertical would be 11 meters. On Jupiter, it would be 72 centimeters — and you wouldn't land softly. The Moon's low gravity means you'd be airborne for about 4 seconds per jump.

How High Could You Jump on Other Worlds?

Your vertical jump depends on two things: how much upward velocity you can generate, and how strong gravity is pulling you back. On Earth, a good athlete might jump 40-60 cm. On the Moon, where gravity is 1/6th, that same jump would clear 2.5-3.6 meters. You could dunk on a basketball hoop without a running start.

On Mars, gravity is about 38% of Earth's. Your 50 cm jump becomes 1.3 meters. On Jupiter — again, no solid surface — you'd barely get off the ground at 16 cm. On Ceres, the dwarf planet, gravity is so weak (0.029g) that you could jump 17 meters high and float back down in about 10 seconds.

The interesting limit is not how high you can jump, but how fast you need to go to escape. On Earth, escape velocity is 11.2 km/s. On the Moon, it's 2.4 km/s. On Ceres, it's about 500 m/s. You couldn't jump off Ceres unless you could sprint at 500 m/s — which is about the speed of a bullet. So even on a tiny asteroid, you're not going anywhere without a rocket.
